Butterfly stool, Sori Yanagi design,
Produced by Tendo Mokko .
Rosewood and solid brass,
42 x 30 x 42 cm, circa 2000.
Stool designed by the famous Sori Yanagi and produced by the prestigious Japanese firm Tendo Mokko .
This is the original version, Tendo Mokko having obtained the first production rights in 1954, long before Vitra acquired them for the European market. The company’s models carry different labels depending on their period of manufacture. The one we offer, according to its label and the information provided by the original purchaser, was produced in the early 2000s. In keeping with Tendo Mokko traditions, it bears an authenticity label and a hand-stamped serial number on the underside of the seat, a practice established in 1954.
Made from molded plywood with a rosewood finish, this stool is a real sculpture. It is assembled using solid brass joints, giving the piece timeless elegance and exceptional refinement. Versatile, it can be used as a stool, book-rest or decorative element, blending subtly into any interior. Its airy silhouette, inspired by a butterfly in flight, makes it a design icon.
We also offer a version in maple, which contrasts beautifully with the rosewood model thanks to its lighter shade.
Although its minimalist, iconic design has been imitated many times, it has never been equaled. A refined, historic piece, a testament to Japanese craftsmanship and design.
